Every year at Christmas time, the city would string lights in all of the neighborhoods.  The workers would attach them from one wooden light pole to another.  There would be colored lights and a large ornament that had Seasons Greetings hanging down over the street.

It was pretty cool in the evening time to see the colored lights all the way down Mt. Vernon Avenue. They added to the festive air of the season.

These lights were placed on all of the main streets.  We would often watch the workers as they strung them.  Which was usually right after Thanksgiving.  Back in the day, we didn't rush holiday preparations.
