Micheal Jackson will never know the significant impact he has had on my life. I owe my love of scary movies all to one pivital music video. I think that I was at least 4 years old when this event took place. I think my family was living in New Mexico at the time. I don't remember whether or not my brother was born yet. This is the story of how Micheal Jackson's Thriller first scarred, then changed my life.
I remember little about the day or time of year. What I do know it that forever my family has had a love of movies. This day my mother had taken me and my little sister to the local movie rental store. I don't remember what we were getting. It was around the time when large screen TVs were just gaining popularity and they were a luxury for the rich and famous. This store had one right in the very front. To a four year old it was GINORMOUS!
My mother, sister, and I were headed to the front of the store to check out when a movie started playing. On the screen there was a nice looking teenage couple dressed in 1950's gettup and sitting in a convertable. Romance is in the air. The moon is full and bright. Birds are singing sweetly in the trees. Everything is sweet and serene. NOT!
Suddenly the music turns sinister and the boy is doubled over in pain. The girl not knowing what do do tries to see if the boy is alright. Then it happens: Yellow eyes that would haunt me for the next decade. Teeth that could rip a four year old to shreds. Horror in full Cinema Scope.
As a child I must say that I prided myself on my abiltiy to reach decibles that could make dogs come running. I was unconsolable. The only thing I remember is my mother telling me that we couldn't leave yet. Yeah right. As far as I was conserned I wanted to be no where near that place. My four year old self was thinking only one word: Run!. That I did!.
I remember nothing but being outside and running. Running like my life depended on it. Running like the wind. Running and running and running and then running some more. I kept running. I kept running until I ran smack into a lady. Even then I had to be restrained enough to see that my sister (who was only 6 years old at the time mind you) had been sent to run after me WHILE MY MOTHER STAYED BACK TO PAY! LOL!
For about ten years after that experience, my family had many a laugh at my expence. All they had to do was just find my mother's Thriller album and I could be sent into a frenzy. Little did they know that when I saw the making of the music video, I became a Horror buff for life. Thanks Michael for making me who I am today!
