One as an exhibiting artist who gave exhibitions around the world-so to speak at that time- and a very reserved and methodicly contained program that was as rigorous as they could have possibly have made it. Those years took one hell of a lot of work. One deserves this degree after that. I could have done the same rigorous term at Columbia University in New York in a year or perhaps two less. ( I was asked to be a part of thier program in NYC during my residence by Leon Golden, my professor and others)
I began in 1986 fresh from New York with a killer techique, skills and mastery of the medium. Of course being an artist these can always be pursuasive elements, semantic envoys to deeper perceptual communities in which one may or may not be a part of, voice ones opinion over or be as ecclectic in device as per the situations of being a student vs. being a "Master".
Arizona was a very heavy program, there was no doubt about it. I was told early on that one had to "fasten their seat-belt" when going towards a degree at ASU. It was true in music as well as art. Of course I was not ready for how many credits I would have to make-up with the University. I was sure that a Columbia University "S" Grade-meaning Superior -would at least be equivilent to an "A" or given the benifit of a doubt-at least a credit. Or that 3000 odd hours of work at the National Academy and the Art Students League would account for something...bound by signature and levied by interview. But not. I had to put petition upon petition in for possibilities to get my grades and letters of recommendation in for 'possible' credits. Of course I was not the only one. There was a fellow from New York University who came in and went out...another from Julliard School who was amazed at the policy (he had his degree too...but had to make up for deficiencies) It was strange for others, but this was par for the course in Arizona. I think at the bottom of it were more hours taken and more credits that had to be paid for...the longer the program the more they can-well, I will leave it up to the imagination.
It took over 4 years towards this degree in Arizona. Why? I cannot tell. Meanwhile, I had worked as an artist on commercial work and exhibitions domestic and abroad, and meawhile I made up all the cross-references to a Masters of Science-if this was needed instead of completing the MFA. I was always challenged there as a professional. I had few if any collegues all the years I attended there. People asked me back east who where studying if there was a good program to attend out west. I mentioned ASU. Soon they were coming..the good illustrators from the league to get their MFA's...but it was true the difficulties in the program, as well as the long processes for each stage of the program made them often leave shortly after their 9 hour qualifying review. All I can say is that the MFA Program at ASU was intense.
