It Has Been A Rough Year

I am adding this additional chapter to my introduction, because after I initially wrote the introduction, it was very difficult to come back to it and try to make sense of all that I have experienced through the various stages of my life and the trials that I have endured or overcome.  I wish ...

I met my first real boyfriend, Travis T. the summer I was 19.  The year was 1991 and it was the fourth of July.  His sister, Lyndsey, was friends with my sisters Kelli and Karla.  Travis was the first guy who really swept me off my feet.  I never had the time to think about dating while I was in school.  I was too busy worrying about my health, trying to catch up on what I had missed and also taking care of my sisters.  I was also extremely shy and I had a very low self esteem.

I also met Travis's brothers, Darrick and Darian.  Darrick and Darian are twins.  They all came over one day that summer.  We were standing in my front yard and one of my sisters had the hose out and was watering the roses.  Travis grabbed the hose and shouted, "Darian grab her!"  And Darian put his arms around me so I couldn't run.  Then Travis sprayed me.  I was mad at the time, but I eventually saw the humor in it.  Especially since I did the same thing to Wayne.

When Travis came along, I was more than ready for a boyfriend.  Unfortunately, he was an alcoholic and I started to drink with him.  That was a big mistake.  His mom and brothers warned me not to get tangled up with him.  I am just too much like my dad, stubborn and bullheaded.  He turned 21 the day after the fourth of July.  Not long after we started dating he got kicked out of his grandmothers' house.  His mom and little sister lived there so his mom could help her mother, Travis' grandmother.  He had stolen his moms' car and done a lot of other stuff while intoxicated that landed him in jail so his grandmother put her foot down.  So, my mom let him stay with us and he slept on the couch.  He wanted me to sleep with him, but I wasn't ready.  I remember one night we were in the this camper trailer in front of his grandmothers' house.  He was drunk and he was getting too pushy.  I gave him back his cross and chain that I had been wearing and then I left.  I was not going to let someone pressure me into doing something I was not ready for.  The next day he called me to get his things together so he could come down and get them.  He came along with Darrick and Darian.  After we broke up, we kept seeing each other.  I started to drink more and I finally gave in to him.  I started to drink so much that it seemed like I was drunk all the time.  I kept seeing Travis even though he was going with other girls.  He even had the nerve to bring one of them to my house.   After that I stopped seeing Travis completely.

I kept going out and partying.  Stacy and I had started hanging out with some people I had went to high school with.  There was one house in particular we all hung out in the basement of.  We would go out every single night.  And unless we had someone sober to drive us home we would stay out all night.  We never got into a car with a driver who was drunk.  After a while I stopped taking all my medications including the anti-rejection ones.  I had decided it too inconvenient to take them with me.  Before long my kidney went into rejection.

I was in a downward spiral.  I went through more guys than I would like to admit.  It's hard for me to write about this.  I just thank God that I did not end up with HIV.
