In 1998 my best friend died in a car accident. This tragedy was such a shock to me that I left my church for a year. Losing my sister was very hard. You don’t know who to blame (the other driver but it was an accident). I stopped going to church and hated God (or thought I did).
That was my first major loss in life, other than my featured story where someone in our town I knew died. It hit me hard because it was so unexpected.
Then my mother was diagnosed with cancer over Christmas of 1999. That was another turning point. This was the year I returned to the church. I realized that I could not handle these burdens on my own. I was angry and lost and confused. I realized that I hadn't really left; I'd just taken a hiatus.
Now, don't go thinking that just because I attend Church regularly I don't question things and live my life with questions - I most certainly do. But my faith keeps me grounded and knowing there is more after death gives life a comforting meaning.
I have since learned to treasure people I care about so much more. My friends and family value each other a lot more, and we live a lot more in the moment now and are grateful for each day. Today I try and live a peaceful life. I am happiest around my grandchildren. They get on my nerves but I enjoy being around them.
