FAQ - Forever

Questions

What is Forever Space?
Forever Space is permanent space that you have purchased in order to store parts or all of your Story, or files – forever. It might seem far fetched to believe that any company will last forever. In that capacity, since not even the Founders of the Company can 100% guarantee that nothing will ever happen to the Company (especially after they’re long gone) we have created a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit called the Story of My Life Foundation (www.storyofmylifefoundation.org) whose primary mission it is to store and keep accessible your Forever Stories: Forever! The Foundation is a separate entity with a separate Board of Directors who maintain and upkeep a copy of all Forever Space data on its own servers and maintain accessibility to your Story forever. You may designate any part, or all, of your Story to be “Forever Space” by purchasing the equivalent amount of Space.

What is Temporary Space?
The Story of My Life website is always free to use so long as you log into your account at least once every six months. The system always gives you a certain amount of free space called “Temporary Space” that you can use at any time so long as you remain active on the site. Any Files, Stories, etc. that are not moved to “Forever Space” are considered temporary. You can check your Space usage on the Space Usage Report from your home page when you are logged into the site. You may not upload more temporary files than total remaining amount of space is allocated for. If you wish to upload more files, you must either purchase more Forever Space, or delete some of your current Files.

How do I buy Forever Space?
You may purchase any amount of space (the minimum purchase is 1Mb, there is no maximum limit) by adding either a package or a custom amount of Space into your Shopping cart. Once you have purchased an amount of Forever Space, you may return to your Vault and designate which Files will be considered Forever Space files. Mark these as part of your permanent, Forever Space and a copy of the Filed goes to the Story of My Life Foundation™ for safe-keeping. You may at any time access your Story to change, edit, or delete files that you have assigned to your Forever Space. The amount of space you can purchase must be in whole megabyte amounts, for example 1Mb or 20Mb or 500Mb. If you choose on the option “Keep everything forever, and charge me when necessary” your total space used will be calculated every 30 days and if the amount of Space that you are using on the website exceeds the amount of Forever Space you currently have, it will automatically charge you for the remaining Space so that all your Space is permanent Forever Space. Please note that you must always round up to the next full Mb amount in order to ensure that there is enough Forever space to cover the full file size.

What is the Forever Promise?
The Forever Promise is the Foundation’s promise to you to provide a means by which your Story can be embodied in digital format and preserved: FOREVER. Every Story created online at Story of My Life is entrusted for safe-keeping by the Story of My Life Foundation® a not-for-profit organization established for the eternal preservation, maintenance, and guaranteed access to Stories. Part of the proceeds from every created Story are contributed directly to the Foundation in an endowment fund to cover hosting, storage, and retrieval costs in perpetuity. The Foundation is entrusted with using the best security and long term data storage technologies available. If this means shooting a time capsule full of data to Mars or using laser encryption to put billions of records on a storage unit the size of a pin, then the Foundation will consider these options to store and maintain Stories forever. The Foundation has an obligation to ensure that access to the Stories is perpetual. As technology, even the internet, changes in future generations, the Foundation will ensure that the latest access methods are incorporated so that no special tools will be required of the User to access this data. In addition, should the Company (Eravita, Inc.) ever cease operations, be acquired, etc. the Foundation has a mission to store and make accessible the data. If anything happens to the Foundation, based on IRS tax exempt regulations, the Company and the Foundation’s Board are bound by a legal contract to work together to find another repository for the data so that it remains accessible, usually through another not-for-profit institution.

How do you calculate how much Forever Space I’m using?
At any time you can check how much Space (Forever and Temporary) by looking at the Space used graph in your left menu, or by going to your Space Usage Report. The amount of Space calculated is determined by the size of the Files you have uploaded as well as how much compressed text you have written. Text takes up a very small amount of space, so most people find that their Space use increases based on the number and file size of files they have uploaded. If you have uploaded many files, or you have uploaded very large files such as videos or pictures that are heavily pixilated such as for print which increases their density and therefore their size, you will find your Space usage is higher. Your Forever Space amount is however much permanent Forever Space you have purchased. The file sizes are calculated to a tenth of a Mb, for example 10.2Mb. Note that you should have at least 11Mb of Forever Space available to cover this 10.2Mb file. If you need more Forever Space you may purchase it at any time, or you may remove files from your Forever Space to make room. You may also try reducing the size of the files themselves [there is a lot of information on the internet on how to reduce file size, especially of photos and videos].

How is the cost of permanent Forever Space set?
The cost is charged on a per Megabyte basis for purchasing Forever Space. In order to calculate this amount, which fluctuates based on various costs, an equation is drawn up that takes into account the following factors: bandwidth and hosting costs (how much does it cost to send this file up and down the “pipeline” or the bandwidth required to deliver this file to anyone viewing, it as well as electricity, server and hardware costs, and personnel costs to run the Network storage units), the Storage costs themselves (costs which include both the server storage as well as the disaster recovery back-up plan should anything happen to the servers), Network monitoring, office and personnel costs, and other security features. After the expenses are deducted, an amount is placed into an endowment fund managed by the Foundation that collects interest at a low-risk yield. The amount of cost therefore is determined by how much after expenses plus earning interest for approximately the next 100 years it would cost to store and keep accessible this data. Why 100 years? Because we know that technology is changing very rapidly and costs for large amounts of data storage are slowly decreasing. The actual amount of the Forever Space is determined by an annual recalculation of the costs and modest interest rate return and adjusted according to costs.

What happens to my Forever Space after I die?
When you cease to exist (which we hope you live long and prosper!), but an eventual fate that currently will befall us all, your Story will be “set” as it is and be permanent forever. How will we know if you are indeed dead and that your Story should be frozen? We will be tapped into all fifty states death certificate issuance offices in v1 in 2007 or thereabouts. We will also rely on your Guardians to tell us this information and we will verify that this subject matter is true. Or, we will note that when there is more than six months of inactivity on your website, we will first attempt to contact you. If that is unsuccessful, we will start attempting, in sequential order, to contact your Guardians until we reach one and are able to verify the status. If we are unable to reach any Guardian, after one year of continual non-activity, your Story will be assumed to frozen as is, forever.

What about my Temporary Space? What will happen to it?
If any or all of the above criteria in the question above are met and the system determines that there is no activity on your Story or that a Guardian has confirmed your passing, the Guardian will be requested whether he/she wishes to make any further files in your Story permanent “Forever” Space. If there are any remaining Temporary files, these files will eventually be deleted permanently. You can avoid losing any files by ensuring that you have enough Forever Space. Please note that we have a long time period before we will permanently delete any files so you have no need to be concerned that if you haven’t logged in for a while all your temporary files will be gone.

What is a Network? Do Networks have Forever Space?
Networks are groups based on interests, kin, friendships, topics, or other reasons for coming together in an atmosphere to express themselves, share interests, and make new friends and communicate with others. At the version1-beta launch of the website, the Friends & Family Networks will not have Forever Space, but will be a feature that is added to the site’s functionality for the v1 full launch in 2007.

Family Networks are a great way to keep in touch with Family members who may be spread far and wide, to share photos, videos and other important files, tell each other about important upcoming events, create your Family tree and leave Messages for other Family Members. The Family Network is an association of individuals who consider themselves a Family who share private functionality on the website. You may activate as many free Networks as you would like on your Story site under the Family tab.

Friends Networks are a just like Family Networks without the Family Tree functionality. You may activate as many free Networks as you would like on your Story site under the Friends tab.
